Are Natural Hair Care Products Really Natural?
Ever wonder what those strange names listed on the ingredients heading on hair care products? I know I have. I have graduated from college and have taken some chemistry courses but surely the hair care industry does not expect everyone to know what those names are. I have noticed that in my search for natural and organic hair products,
companies tend to be even more vague as to the ingredients within a hair product.
Leading me to think, are natural hair care products really natural?
On one of my favorite hair care product, Aubrey Organics, I noticed that instead of labeling Cetyl Alcohol, the company have labeled it as Coconut Fatty Acid Cream.Coconut fatty Acid Cream sounds more natural than Cetyl Alcohol, which is an emulsifier and emollient which leaves the hair rather dry after using it. So not only do I have to learn all the scientific names on the shampoo bottles, but also the natural and organic sounding names. I decided to dig a little deep as whether or not natural products are really natural.
The more research I did the more I realize, in the end, unless I make my own products, I will never truly know the truth. There is absolutely no legal definition of what is considered “natural” or “organic” in the United States. The USDA and the FDA does not regulate and, therefore, does not monitor any product that claims to be “organic.” If a product wants to claim it is “natural,” there must be at least one natural ingredient in it. This is disheartening to say the least.
Millions of dollars are spent every year on products that claim to be natural or organic. One way to find out if a natural hair care product is really natural is to call the company up and ask them. Chances are you either going to get a truthful answer or a rather sketchy one at best. Another way, is to simply make the product yourself with natural ingredients you can find in your own home.
In the end, one can never be sure if a natural product is really natural. I have tried many products that claim to be all natural or all organic and have had mixed results. However, if person truly want to go natural, I believe they would be better off learning how to make homemade natural hair care products. There are various websites online that offers natural hair care recipes for you to try.
